Best Time to Visit Karnak Temple (And How to Avoid the Crowds)

Karnak Temple at sunrise, Luxor

Karnak Temple is the largest religious complex ever built, and it's on almost every visitor's list — which means it can get busy, especially when several Nile cruise ships and tour groups arrive at once. The good news is that with a little planning and a private driver, it's easy to enjoy Karnak without feeling rushed or surrounded by crowds.

The single best tip is timing: arrive right at opening time, before the large coach groups from Hurghada and the cruise ships make their way over. Early morning light is also softer and more flattering for photos, and temperatures are far more comfortable for walking the site, which is larger than it looks from the entrance.

If an early start isn't possible, late afternoon (the last 90 minutes before closing) is the next best option, especially in the cooler months from October to April. Either way, having a private driver means you're not tied to a fixed group schedule — Tito can adjust your pickup time day-to-day depending on cruise ship schedules and how you're feeling.

Quick Tips for Visiting Karnak Temple

  • Visit at opening time or in the last 90 minutes before closing
  • Bring a hat, sunglasses and water, even in winter months
  • Allow at least 1.5-2 hours to see the Hypostyle Hall and main temple area
  • Combine with Luxor Temple in the late afternoon for a full East Bank day
  • Wear comfortable shoes — the site involves a lot of walking on uneven stone

The Complete Guide to Luxor Airport Transfers

Private driver waiting at Luxor Airport at night

Luxor International Airport (LXR) is small compared to Cairo or Hurghada, but after a long flight, even a short walk through immigration and baggage claim can feel like a lot — especially if you're arriving late at night, which many international connections do.

With a pre-arranged private transfer, the process is simple: once you collect your luggage and pass through customs, you'll find your driver waiting in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. There's no need to look for taxi ranks, negotiate a price, or worry about currency — everything is agreed in advance over WhatsApp.

Flight delays are common and completely normal — Tito tracks incoming flights, so even if your arrival time shifts by an hour or two, your driver will already know and adjust the pickup time accordingly. The same applies to your departure: Tito will collect you from your hotel with plenty of time built in for check-in and security.

What to Have Ready Before You Land

  • Your flight number, sent in advance via WhatsApp
  • Your hotel name or cruise ship name and dock location
  • A note of how many passengers and how much luggage you have
  • Your WhatsApp number switched on for local data/roaming on arrival

Valley of the Kings: Which Tombs Are Worth the Extra Ticket?

Decorated tomb interior, Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world, with over 60 known tombs cut into the desert hillside on Luxor's West Bank. A standard entrance ticket includes access to three tombs (excluding Tutankhamun and a few other special tombs), which is more than enough for most visitors.

Tutankhamun's tomb requires a separate ticket and is, to be honest, smaller and less elaborately decorated than several of the 'included' tombs — many visitors find it underwhelming compared to the hype, though seeing the original burial site of the boy king is still a special moment for history lovers.

If you do want to add an extra tomb, the tombs of Seti I or Ramses VI (when open) are often considered among the most beautifully preserved, with vivid colours and detailed astronomical ceiling paintings. Tito can advise on the day which tombs are currently open, since access occasionally rotates for conservation work.

Tips for Visiting the Valley of the Kings

  • Photography inside tombs may require an additional camera ticket
  • A small tourist train runs from the car park to the tomb entrances
  • Visit early morning to avoid both heat and crowds inside the tombs
  • Combine with the Temple of Hatshepsut and Colossi of Memnon for a full West Bank day

A Magical Sunset: What to Expect on a Nile Felucca Ride

Sunset over the Nile in Luxor

A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat that has been used on the Nile for centuries, and a sunset ride remains one of the most relaxing ways to end a day of sightseeing in Luxor. Unlike larger motorboats, feluccas move quietly with the wind, giving a peaceful view of the riverbanks, palm trees and the silhouettes of the West Bank hills.

Most rides last between 45 minutes and an hour, departing from the Corniche near central Luxor. There's no fixed schedule — Tito can arrange a felucca to depart around sunset, which changes slightly throughout the year, so timing is adjusted depending on the season.

It's a wonderfully simple experience: no commentary, no itinerary, just the sound of water and wind as the sky turns orange and pink behind Luxor Temple and the Theban hills. It pairs especially well as a relaxed finish after a busy day visiting Karnak or the West Bank temples.

Good to Know Before You Sail

  • Bring a light jacket — it can get breezy on the water after sunset
  • Drinks and snacks can usually be arranged on board on request
  • Best combined with a relaxed day rather than straight after a long temple tour
  • Photography conditions are best in the 30 minutes around sunset
